New Year, New Fashion Resolutions

With Christmas over and 2011 officially under way, you can hear the sound of lists being pinned to fridges and repeated out loud lest we forget the power of good intentions that comes with the advent of January.

At Upper Street, we have the usual suspects on our lists; finding space in our schedules for exercise, being more organised and trying to squeeze in a little extra quality time where possible.

Being a bunch of fashion obsessed girls, we thought we’d also include a few fashion musts… and some lighthearted must nots.

Stay away from the sales – they tend to lead to impulse buys. If you didn’t need it in the first place, then it’s really not a bargain… even though the tag is screaming half price and inducing that adrenalin rush that normally has you scurrying off to the till.

Plan ahead with what you’re going to wear. Pick out your outfit, including accessories, the night before so that you’re not running around like a headless chicken in the morning searching for the perfect necklace to go with that dress.

Take a fashion risk and buy with drama once in a while. This is not to be confused with the impulse buy – it has to be something that you could pull out again and again over the next twenty years, a dramatic classic. Think a stunning leopard print coat, an exquisitely beaded clutch or maybe some colourful killer strappy sandals.

Buy the size that fits you perfectly now, not the size that you tell yourself you’ll diet into. Far better to look confident and comfortable in those gorgeous jeans than have the smaller unworn size taunt you every time you open the wardrobe door.

Edit your wardrobe and be ruthless when doing so. If you haven’t worn it for a year, are keeping it to fit into one day or can’t let it go because your first boyfriend said he liked it on you… it has to go. A rack full of ten so-so items and two that really work is far more confusing than one of five perfect pieces.
