Breaking With Wedding Shoe Tradition

In our last blog post we looked at the wedding shoe style dilemmas of some Upper Street customers and how to solve them. But what if your wedding shoe dilemma is all about breaking away from tradition and finding the perfect heels to complete your unique and special day?

We love to hear the customer design story behind every order we receive, especially when it comes to bridal shoes. Take a look at some of our beautiful Upper Street brides and see how we helped them find the perfect bespoke solution for their wedding day heels with a very individual touch…

Marine d’Orsay peep toe

Canadian bride, Bryana Kitlarchuk wanted her wedding shoes to be her ‘Something Blue’ and in her own words, “really high”. Her final design was a stunning peep toe platform in contrasting deep marine and indigo satin finished off with a beautiful Swarovski jewel cluster. Having told all her friends about her wedding shoes, they all wanted to see them and she felt they were definitely a highlight of the day.

Red satin snake platform peep toe

Self-confessed shoe addict Holly Attolini loves to inject colour into her wardrobe with her shoes so she knew that when it came to her bridal heels, they had to be red. Having bought and rejected 25 pairs, Holly finally found Upper Street and designed these gorgeous scarlett satin and red snake d’Orsay cut platform peep toes. Holly ended up with lots of pictures of her showing off her shoes to her guests on the big day and even surrendering one for them to try on!

Asymmetric pointed court

Selina Priestly from Yorkshire, had a rather unusual source of inspiration for the design of her wedding day shoes. Selina loved the idea of seeing flashes of colour peeping out from under her wedding dress so in honour of both her and husband-to-be’s dedication to their favourite football team, Leeds United, she opted for the team colours! A pointed court in cobalt suede with contrasting yellow snake and patent panels ensured Selina came out top of the league in the shoe stakes on her wedding day!

Snake d’Orsay bow

Meticulous care and attention to detail are two very important principles that we hold dear to our hearts here at Upper Street and this is certainly how Ali Rhodes’ art deco themed wedding was planned. To compliment her stunning wedding gown that oozed old style Hollywood glamour, Ali designed a pair of beautiful d’Orsay cut silver snake heels with a large pewter snake bow. To add a very special personal touch she asked us to add the inscription “On my wedding day, 29th May 2011″ to the inside of her shoe. Fairytale shoes for a fairytale bride.

Flame satin flower platforms

Wendy Dempsey describes her style as very understated, but she’s a huge fan of statement heels and loves to spice up her outfits with gorgeously colourful shoes… and her wedding day was no exception. She added a twist to her classic bridal outfit by designing these stunning d’Orsay cut platforms in rich flame satin with a strap and flower detail. We loved Wendy’s design and the fact that she gets to wear them again and again!

The possibilities for adding something unique to your shoe for the most special of days are practically endless at Upper Street – add an inscription for that ultra personal touch, opt for a different colour lining a la Kate Moss and her blue lined wedding heels or simply request an alternative material to any that you see in our design studio.

We understand that every bride not only wants to be unique but also for her wedding planning to be stress free, so if you have any design queries or concerns, our customer advisers are always happy to help and we also supply swatches for that all important perfect match.

My amazing Upper Street blue wedding shoes

When Canadian bride, Bryana Kitlarchuk posted “my amazing “something blue” wedding shoes on our Facebook page we just had to feature her in our blog. We caught up with Bryana post-wedding to find out more about her amazing, something blue wedding shoes.

Tell us a little about yourself

I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where I’ve worked as a Registered Nurse for over 4 years. My husband (boyfriend at the time) and I bought our house three years ago and quickly made it a home. Him and me are pretty laid back. We like to go to pubs, and like going to see local bands.  My parents and my two older brothers both live in the city.

How would you describe your personal style?

My personal style can vary between a modernized retro-ness, to a bohemian like style. I usually live my day to to day life in flats (comfy, yet stylish), but if going out at night, I love to rock a great pair of high heels.

What’s your relationship with shoes?

I love shoes, probably own about 20-25. I wouldn’t say I’m obsessive, but if I see a nice pair of shoes, I have a hard time not buying them.

What was your design inspiration for your Upper Street shoes?

All I knew when I first started designing my wedding shoes was that I wanted them to be my “something blue”, and I wanted them to be really high! I probably designed about 20 pairs, then was able to finally decide which would be my perfect pair.

What did you think when you opened your parcel from Upper Street?

They were packaged so beautifully, and I was so excited to try them on. Unfortunately, they were too big, but Upper Street had such amazing customer service, and I was able to get my perfect pair in the right size.

What did your friends have to say about your shoes?

All of my friends had heard about my shoes, and were so excited to see them on my wedding day. They were definitely a highlight.

So will we be seeing you at Upper Street again soon?

Most likely!!

If you’ve been inspired by Bryana’s gorgeous blue satin wedding shoes, why not design your perfect wedding shoes with Upper Street. If you need design inspiration please visit our Bridal gallery or read our design tips for Bridal Shoes and Vintage Bridal Shoes.

Celebrity Weddings – Rock & Royal

Category: Bridal

This year has produced a bumper crop of high profile, celebrity weddings and like most people, here at Upper Street we love a good wedding. Not least for both the bridal and guest footwear ogling opportunities it provides!

At the conservative chic end of the scale we had possibly the most anticipated royal wedding of all time, Prince William and Kate Middleton. Then there was the marriage seemingly steeped in controversy between Prince Albert of Monaco and Charlene Wittstock.

The footwear favourite seemed to be the shoe of the summer, the nude and champagne hued heel. There was a lot of added sparkle and embellishment – perfect for a little royal wedding bling.

A mix of pointed courts and platforms, some in contrast to the outfit and some in a tonal hue stepped out alongside T-bar sandals and shimmering satin lower heel options.

In the rock corner there were the country weddings of Lily Allen and Sam Cooper and Kate Moss to Jamie Hince. Both came with well heeled guest lists and a variety of stylish shoe choices. As suspected Ms Moss’s wedding had a vintage, boho-chic feel and the simple satin ballet flats chosen for the bridesmaids complimented her John Galliano wedding gown perfectly. Don’t forget to look out for Upper Street’s new ballet flat design coming later this year – subscribe to our newsletter to stay informed. Have a look at our Bridesmaids Shoes Design Guides for inspiration and tips.

Kate’s own shoes were by Manolo Blahnik and rumoured to have had a blue lining to incorporate the Something Blue tradition – a bespoke touch loved by everyone in the Upper Street office.

Singer Lily Allen married Sam Cooper and had more than one reason to smile on her big day – the good news that Lily is pregnant was revealed by the groom at the reception. That didn’t stop Lily gaining a little height for her wedding in the form of her Rupert Sanderson platform peep toes.

Every bride needs to make sure her heels are the right height for her and the groom  which is why Upper Street offer varying heel and platform height options selectable at the checkout stage. We understand that every detail on your big day has to be perfect! If you’re getting married soon and haven’t yet made that all important wedding day shoe decision, take a look at our bridal and vintage bridal features for a little inspiration.

Who do you think got it just right for their wedding and which guest do you think ran away with the well-heeled wedding guest prize?

Something Blue

Category: Bridal

Marine Satin Peep Toe Platform

When it comes to getting married and arranging a wedding ceremony that’s right for you as a couple, most people end up wanting to incorporate a little bit of tradition somewhere along the line. Even the confirmed individualists among us sometimes adopt one thing off the exhaustive list of marital customs.

Often it’s the Something Blue tradition that is a firm favourite to hold onto, possibly due to the meaning behind it – in ancient times it was thought of as a symbol of faithfulness, purity and loyalty. In years gone by we’ve all seen the infamous blue garter make an appearance at some stage in the proceedings but if this isn’t for you, why not design a pair of bespoke heels in one of our blue hues?

Sea Satin Peep Toe With Gem, Eau Satin Bow Sandal

At Upper Street we’re starting to see a real trend for blue wedding shoes and with five different shades available in satin, you’re sure to find one that’s right for you. If it’s a full on occasion with a dramatic location and dress to match, you could let your beautiful shoes peep out from under the hem of your gown.
Or try something different and make a bold statement with our beautiful snakeskins in cobalt blue. Your shoes can be as unique and relevant to you as you wish.

Marine Satin d’Orsay Bow

For the low-key ceremony why not pair some beautiful blue heels with a minimal outfit a la Carrie & Big in the infamous wedding scene from Sex And The City?

Don’t forget about your bridesmaids and the mums too. If they’ll be wearing blue on the big day then take a look at our extensive range of colours and design a pair of unique shoes that will complete their look perfectly.

Eau Satin Round Toe d’Orsay

For a bona fide footwear fanatic, the shoes for the big day are as important as the dress… and in some cases, even more so! At Upper Street we understand the shoe dilemmas that face every bride to be and are always happy to help with any design queries you may have. Satin swatches are available on request and a lower heel option for your design can be selected at the checkout.

Upper Street shoes come in a huge range of sizes from the petite 33 (UK 1.5) to the generous 43 (UK 10) with 4 width fittings. We also offer free alterations to fit and we’re so confident that you’ll love your final design that we’ll refund you if you don’t!
