Bespoke Bridal Ballet Flats

Category: Bridal

Many brides for one reason or another would prefer not to wear heels on their big day but instead wish to choose a ballet flat option. If as a bride-to-be the usual selection of plain ivory flats has left you uninspired, take a look at the new Upper Street ballet flats and fall in love with the perfect bespoke design for your wedding day.

Here are a few questions we’ve had in the past from some of our Upper Street brides and the solutions we would recommend…

Vanilla bridal flat

Choosing a bridal ballet flat in traditional colours needn’t mean looking like you’re about to perform a solo from Swan Lake. This elegant bridal flat in silky Italian satin with white gold small leather bow and piping has a touch of luxurious sparkle provided by a Swarovski crystal gem. With an Upper Street ballet flat your options for customisation are endless – add a delicate ankle strap with a sprinkling of diamante or adorn the front of your shoe with a beautiful flower. Satin swatches are available on request to help ensure that your shoe tones perfectly with your dress.

Heart ballet flat

If ever there was an occasion to wear your heart on your ballet flat then surely your wedding day must be it? For this design, teal metallic leather combines with shocking pink and red metallic hearts on the toe and back. Select from our myriad of shades to pick out the colour theme of your wedding or design a similar shoe in beautiful toning shades of soft satin or sumptuous suede.

Tartan ballet flat

If you’re looking for something unique and personal to you then you’ve come to the right place. Design a ballet flat with your choice of material, add a personal inscription to the inside of your shoe or why not make the lining a beautiful shade of blue to tick off a bridal tradition a la Kate Moss? Get in touch and let us know your requirements and we can produce the perfect ballet flat tailored to your individual needs.

Violet satin gem ballet flat

This stunning violet Italian satin gem fronted ballet flat would be a truly out-of-the-ordinary shoe for your bridesmaids. The possibilities for designing a shoe to compliment the colours and theme of your wedding are endless – play with different colours for the bow, piping and ankle strap and add sparkle either in the form of a gem cluster or with a sprinkling of Swarovski Diamante on an ankle or Mary Jane strap.

An Upper Street wedding Down Under

Upper Street bride Nicole Pharaoh not only wanted to design her own unique wedding shoes, she treated her three bridesmaids to bespoke Upper Street shoes too. Read Nicole’s story about an Aussie girl, living in Singapore, with her UK bridesmaids getting married in Australia. A truly International wedding!

Bride Nicole and her bridesmaids in their Upper Street shoes

Tell us a little about yourself
I am an Aussie girl living in Singapore with my new English husband. We have been in Singapore for about a year now but I’m planning the move home to Australia in the very near future. The climate is very hot and humid here, so I am looking forward to getting back to a country that has 4 seasons… allowing me to indulge in my full range of shoes. We both work stressful office jobs and enjoy exercise in the evening after work so the weekends are usually spent chilling out at home with our 2 cats, watching films and listening to music or hanging out with friends.

How would you describe your personal style?
I’m a jeans and t-shirt girl all over. I love being in comfortable, relaxed clothes. Even in the office I tend to wear casual style tops with office skirts and pants, but I especially look forward to dress down Friday when I can wear denim. I also love long maxi dresses that skim the floor. I wear a lot of black, but mostly that’s because it makes it easy for me to wear any colour shoes I want and my wardrobe is pretty much decided by what shoes I want to wear that day.

What’s your relationship with shoes?
I LOVE SHOES! All shapes and colours, but they have to be comfortable. I love heels, but being tall makes it hard (I’m 6ft tall) as I stick out like a sore thumb, but it also means big feet and I certainly cannot buy shoes in Singapore. I usually keep heels for the office and special nights out. The rest of the time I will be wearing flats. I love sandals and anything that I can slip on quickly. I even keep a drawer of shoes in the office that I rotate every couple of weeks… the girls think I’m mad, but they definitely get locked up every night. I probably own about 50 pairs of shoes, but I’m no Imelda. My collection includes thongs (flip flops), sandals, heels and boots. I lived in the UK for a few years so collected lots of boots and flats that last on the cobblestone streets, but now living in a hot climate means the boots never come out and the strappies are in. I keep all of the boxes for my shoes, but as I’ve been moving internationally quite a bit I have managed to get 2 pairs in a box. Even though I can’t see them, I know exactly what is where. I’m in love with wedges right now. They give me the heel I love and the comfort and stability of a flat shoe.

The bride's and bridesmaids Upper Street shoes

What was your design inspiration for your Upper Street shoes? Did you create them for a special event?

My wedding day. I knew I wouldn’t be able to buy a pair of shoes for my wedding day that would be comfortable enough to wear all day, plus I wanted something special, not white satin shoes. Something different that I could wear again and again. My favourite colours are pink and purple and I love snakeskin so it made sense that I had to design my own shoes for my special day to these details. When I searched for bespoke shoe design online, I was so very happy to find Upper Street. I have been designing shoes and adding them to my account for months and have a lot in ‘My Collection’. In fact, my wedding shoes weren’t my first pair.

I also wanted to give my bridesmaids something different for their wedding gift, so I had them go online as well and design their own shoes that I had made for them to wear on the day. It certainly was a lot of fun doing this with them too and their designs were gorgeous… they are lucky their feet are a lot smaller than mine.

What did you think when you opened your parcel from Upper Street?

The packaging is amazing and the little extras like the gels and the dust bag really set Upper Street apart. Opening the big pink ribbon and the hand written note it really was like getting a gift in the post. I love the colours, the black and bright pink, beautiful!

What did your friends have to say about your shoes?
Everyone loves my shoes. On the wedding day everyone was asking where we all got our shoes and in the office the girls always compliment them. I love them too. They are so pretty and they make me smile every time I wear them… plus they remind me of my wedding day, the most amazing day of my life.

So will we be seeing you at Upper Street again soon?

Absolutely! The only problem I have is which pair to order next. I think I will have to order a pair for Xmas… maybe that can be my present to myself.

Upper Street Bride – Ali Rhodes

Category: Bridal

Silver snake d’Orsay with pewter bow

Upper Street are thrilled to introduce you to one of our most beautiful brides, Ali Rhodes. On 29th May, Ali married Charles in an uber chic celebration in the heart of London’s Docklands in an art deco themed wedding.

To compliment her stunning bridal gown, Ali designed a beautiful pair of 3.5″ heel,  d’Orsay cut Upper Street shoes in silver snake with a large pewter bow. Ali asked for the inscription “On my wedding day, 29th May 2011” to be added to the inside of her shoe as an extra special personal touch. We absolutely adored Ali’s design and as with every bride who wants that little something extra when it comes to her bespoke design, we were more than happy to help.

Ali clearly has en eye for detail as every finishing touch at her wedding was planned to her’s and her groom’s unique taste and with meticulous care and attention. Principles that we hold very close to our hearts here at Upper Street.

We think Ali’s shoes added that final finishing touch to her wedding day look that oozed pure old style, Hollywood glamour.

If you’re planning a wedding and want to ensure that your shoes compliment both your gown and the overall theme of your celebration then take a look at our wedding shoe gallery, vintage bridal feature and some of our previous bridal blog posts.

Don’t forget to get in touch if you require swatches of our beautiful Italian satin or have any extra detail for your shoes that you’d like help with for yours or your bridesmaid’s shoes.

Celebrity Weddings – Rock & Royal

Category: Bridal

This year has produced a bumper crop of high profile, celebrity weddings and like most people, here at Upper Street we love a good wedding. Not least for both the bridal and guest footwear ogling opportunities it provides!

At the conservative chic end of the scale we had possibly the most anticipated royal wedding of all time, Prince William and Kate Middleton. Then there was the marriage seemingly steeped in controversy between Prince Albert of Monaco and Charlene Wittstock.

The footwear favourite seemed to be the shoe of the summer, the nude and champagne hued heel. There was a lot of added sparkle and embellishment – perfect for a little royal wedding bling.

A mix of pointed courts and platforms, some in contrast to the outfit and some in a tonal hue stepped out alongside T-bar sandals and shimmering satin lower heel options.

In the rock corner there were the country weddings of Lily Allen and Sam Cooper and Kate Moss to Jamie Hince. Both came with well heeled guest lists and a variety of stylish shoe choices. As suspected Ms Moss’s wedding had a vintage, boho-chic feel and the simple satin ballet flats chosen for the bridesmaids complimented her John Galliano wedding gown perfectly. Don’t forget to look out for Upper Street’s new ballet flat design coming later this year – subscribe to our newsletter to stay informed. Have a look at our Bridesmaids Shoes Design Guides for inspiration and tips.

Kate’s own shoes were by Manolo Blahnik and rumoured to have had a blue lining to incorporate the Something Blue tradition – a bespoke touch loved by everyone in the Upper Street office.

Singer Lily Allen married Sam Cooper and had more than one reason to smile on her big day – the good news that Lily is pregnant was revealed by the groom at the reception. That didn’t stop Lily gaining a little height for her wedding in the form of her Rupert Sanderson platform peep toes.

Every bride needs to make sure her heels are the right height for her and the groom  which is why Upper Street offer varying heel and platform height options selectable at the checkout stage. We understand that every detail on your big day has to be perfect! If you’re getting married soon and haven’t yet made that all important wedding day shoe decision, take a look at our bridal and vintage bridal features for a little inspiration.

Who do you think got it just right for their wedding and which guest do you think ran away with the well-heeled wedding guest prize?
