Shoe Design of the Week: Shoe Designing at 79
Whoever said that with age, you lose your style is WRONG; if anything it can be the complete opposite, age can be your inspiration. That is exactly what this Shoe Design of the Week takes a look at, these sassy, stylish fuchsia snakeskin courts were designed by the wonderful septuagenarian Jennifer Davidson. We absolutely adore her simplistic, yet timeless design. So keep reading to find out more about her experience with Upper Street.
Tell us a little about yourself Jennifer
I am divorced and almost 80. I now live in Thailand, right next to my son and his family. I worked for 40 years in senior positions in the nursing area of the NHS, in England. When I retired I trained in Beauty therapy and worked for 10 years, so I saw and used all kinds of fashionable women as my inspiration. I then went to University and studied Fine Art Painting; I now continue to paint in my home, in Thailand. My interests are fashion, beauty, cooking, gardening , and swimming (I swim a kilometre a week). Some could say that there’s really no stopping me. I have found that over the years my fashion and style has changed some what, but the advantage of becoming older is that you have a lot of experience from throughout your life to draw inspiration from, as well as a large wardrobe that you have accumulated over the years.
Where did you get your inspiration for your shoes from?
My inspiration for the shoes came from Upper Street’s shoe galleries, from fashion magazines, as well as fashion shows on TV. I designed the shoes especially for Christmas and they will most definitely got shown around, especially Christmas Eve when we went to celebrate the festivities at the Dusit hotel in the town near by.
As I was in England for the summer I took the opportunity to visit the Upper Street studio and see how comfortable they are for myself. I am extremely happy and confident with ordering online and look forward to designing as many individual shoes as possible, no bland slip-ons for me.
Thank you ever so much Jennifer for sharing your shoe designing secrets with us. You’ve really brought all your experiences together to wow us with your design. Just like style icon Iris Apfel, Jennifer doesn’t see age as a hindrance but as an accessory.

AW12 Trends – Black is Back
Black satin platform court with wide strap, Black Snakeskin Studded Platform Sandal, Black studded pointed court
The Autumn/Winter 2012 catwalks brought us back a classic of the fashion world. Black is known for being one of the most elegant and stylish colours. It can be worn for any occasion and it’s extremely versatile.
Amongst the many different catwalk interpretations of black, we fell head over heels for these three:
Gothic-Chic
The Gothic-chic look is back and it could be seen all over the Givenchy and Fendi catwalks.
It’s all about the studs, the straps and leather with a harder edge. With inspiration from Rooney Mara, star of the worldwide bestseller “The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo”, we created these black shoes with an edge.
The stunning black Italian satin platform court shoe with elegant D’Orsay cut sides show a flash of your foot. To update the shoe for AW12, we added a wide strap decorated with a black snakeskin buckle and a black snakeskin toe cap. It comes in a 4.5” heel & 0.5” platform. (also available with 3.5” heel and 0.25” platform, select at checkout).
The second one is an edgy black snakeskin platform D’Orsay sandal with counter back and a pewter leather strap. Embellished with gunmetal studs on the front with a 4.5″ heel and 0.5″ platform, it’s the perfect design to go with a black leather dress or trousers.
We took the classic black pointed courts to a whole new level with these black patent leather pointed courts combined with studded snakeskin top cap and counter back for the ultimate naughty, but nice evening shoe. It comes with a 3.75″ heel, and is also available as a 2.25” kitten heel.
Black and gold platform peep toe, Black and gold pointed court
Baroque inspired: blacks and golds.
The baroque inspired collection presented by Dolce & Gabanna was breathtaking. The beautifully designed dresses, combined blacks, golds and shimmery organzas, accentuating the feminine figure.
For a subtle statement we created this stylish black suede platform peep toes with a contrasting gold bow accent. Gold snakeskin was also used on the heel and platform. It has a 4.5″ heel with 0.5″ platform (3.5″ heel and 0.25″ platform also available in checkout).
For the perfect day to night baroque inspired shoes we designed these black and gold pointed court heels, with D’Orsay sides in black leather and contrasting gold snakeskin toe cap and heel. It has a black leather ankle strap to ensure maximum hold. They come with a 3.75″ heel. (2.25″ kitten heel also available in checkout)
Black evening court shoe, Black patent court shoe with buckle
Feminine with an edge.
The third and last AW12 trend we absolutely love, is the ‘Feminine with a harder edge” look. It’s all about updating summer’s feminine girl with a tougher look, and pointed courts that compliment clinched in waists as seen on the Victoria Beckham and Jasper Garvida catwalk shows.
This elegant pointed court in black animal with D’Orsay cut sides has a black satin Mary Jane strap, heel and large bow and is the shoe equivalent of the Little Black Dress. You can customise with different materials or fronts. It comes with a 3.75″ heel and is also available with a 2.25″ kitten heel (select at checkout).
And last but not least, the black glossy pointed court with a sexy short toe, in a stunning glossy black patent. Decorated with a smart silver buckle detail on the front and a 3.75″ heel. (2.25″ kitten heel also available, select at checkout).
